About Dr Adriaan Smit
I am an orthopaedic surgeon with extensive international fellowship training in all aspects of shoulder-, elbow-, wrist- and hand surgery. I previously worked as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the prestigious WRIGHTINGTON HOSPITAL UPPER LIMB UNIT in the United Kingdom.
I follow a policy of continued professional development by attending highest level, peer-review shoulder-, elbow-, wrist- and hand surgery meetings.
I have lectured locally and internationally on various aspects of upper limb- and hand surgery and have both initiated and led national training courses in arthroscopy of the wrist and the elbow.
I was appointed Director of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society’s (EWAS) first arthroscopic wrist course in Southern Africa and have attended European EWAS courses as invited faculty.
I am a member of the South African Orthopaedic Association (2002), the South African Shoulder and Elbow Society (2007) and the South African Society for Surgery of the Hand (2007).
I am a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2004).

What we do
I will take a personalised approach to your problem, learn about your specific needs and help you decide what treatment is best for you. This will include every reasonable effort to avoid surgery.
A team approach leads to best results. My friendly and competent staff are there to help you as best they can. Therapy is an important part of my practice and I work closely with various dedicated Hand Therapists, Biokineticists and Physiotherapists, including Durbanville Wellness Centre and MBW Physiotherapists. Optimal pain management is a priority and I may advise referral to a Pain Clinic.
When indicated, I use office ultrasound in providing a one-stop diagnostic upper limb service.
The practice, adjacent x-ray facilities and on-site hand therapy services are fully accessible by wheelchair.
Surgical procedures are done in the comfortable and modern facilities of either Durbanville Advanced Health day hospital or Durbanville Mediclinic. Both are within an easy walking distance of the practice.
